Vienna, VA—Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts welcomes the cast and crew of Atlanta’s Theater of the Stars in their production of the eight time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Les Misérables. Written by Boublil and Schönberg, Les Misérables has won more than 50 major awards including a Grammy for the original Broadway cast recording, and eight Tony Awards. As the longest running Broadway musical in history playing for 16 years, the show makes its Filene Center stage debut on August 29.

Based on the 1884 classic novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables recounts the struggle of good versus evil in France in the early 1800s. This powerful tale of love, loss, triumph, and redemption includes memorable songs such as “On My Own” and “Do You Hear The People Sing?”

Starring in this production of Les Misérables are Broadway regulars Rob Evan as Jean Valjean, Cindy Benson as Madame Thenardier and Anderson Davis as Marius, all from the original Broadway production; Rob Hunt as Javert, Nikki Renee Daniels as Fantine, famous for her performances with the New York Opera Company and San Francisco Symphony, Jenny Fellner as Eponine, also known for her role as Sophie from the Broadway production of Mamma Mia! and Laurent Giroux as Thenardier, recently featured alongside Wolf Trap favorite Marvin Hamlisch in his concert tour.

The creative talents of Theater of the Stars have produced or presented over 700 shows in Atlanta, across the country, and around the world. Founded in 1953, Theater of the Stars is one of the oldest and most respected regional theaters in America, with the mission to produce and present the best of Broadway musicals.

Venues Today: Blending of Primary and Secondary Still Causing a Stir Between Ticket Pros

ANAHEIM, Calif. & LAS VEGAS — There’s little doubt that the merging of the primary and secondary ticket markets is underway, but just how close are the two sides to coming together as a single industry? Two recent panels at industry conventions — one for ticket brokers, the other for venue managers — show that both sides are far apart on many issues.

Ticket brokers who gathered in Las Vegas July 24-26 for Ticket Summit said they were still frustrated with major ticket companies over what they considered to be roadblocks to the buying and selling of tickets. Just days later, facility managers and box office professionals gathered at the International Association of Assembly Managers conference in Anaheim, Calif., July 25-29 and told a panel of ticketing professionals that they still didn’t believe they were getting their fair share of secondary revenue.

Tickets.com at the 2008 Ticket Summit
Ticket Summit was a mix of the primary and the secondary, hosting a panel that featured Eric Baker from Viagogo, Greg Bettinelli of StubHub, Jeff Lapin from Razorgator, Derek Palmer from Tickets.com, Jeff Scheman from TicketNetwork and Chris Tsakalakis from eBay.

“There continues to be this sense of unfairness by the consumer, the promoter and in many cases, the venue manager, that tickets for concerts in taxpayer-funded facilities are inaccessible to most people,” said Rod Pilbeam, executive director of AEG Ogden in Brisbane, Australia.

Pilbeam’s comment reflected a larger sentiment that still prevails among many facility managers — that buildings and box offices take large risks on concerts, often face excruciatingly tight margins and usually only see the negative side of brokers; namely counterfeit or misleading tickets.

“I’m getting squeezed by promoters who want a piece of every revenue stream,” said Michael Combs of the Tacoma (Wash.) Dome. “Our margins are shrinking all the time, but we log onto sites like StubHub and see tickets going for two to three times their face value, and we’re not seeing any of that income.”

The sense of inequity is coupled with a growing frustration towards aggressive ticket acquisition, where brokers use automated and non-automated means to purchase and resell tickets, along with an increase in secondary ticket listings that aren’t yet available to the public.

“We’re seeing a lot of this frustration communicated to the primary ticket companies because there are very few avenues for direct dialogue between the box office and those reselling tickets,” said Alan Rakov of Ticketmaster’s TicketExchange.

Primary ticketing companies were also the focus of frustration during Ticket Summit, with many brokers complaining that primary forays into secondary tickets could shrink overall market share for brokers.

Broker Russ Altman said he considered paperless tickets, like the ones used on the recent Tom Waits tour to block resale, to be an act of hostility toward the broker community.

“Why don’t the ticket companies stand up to the venues and refuse to develop technology that limits the ability of the buyer to control the ticket,” he said. “It’s our ticket, we paid for it and the ticket companies shouldn’t assist the venues in blocking us out.”

The paperless system Altman spoke of was developed by primary giant Ticketmaster, who recently purchased secondary marketplace TicketsNow.

“The big question is going to be how Ticketmaster balances out the needs of its primary clients while also continuing to rely on brokers to provide the inventory of secondary sites,” said broker Harris Rosner. “There have been some signs that Ticketmaster can move some inventory directly onto the secondary, but in our conversations with (Ticketmaster CEO) Sean Moriarty, he’s made it very clear that Ticketmaster will continue to work with brokers to supply the site.”

The other big disagreement between the two sides will likely center around customer data, said Jeff Lapin of RazorGator.

“Owning your customer is going to become more important than ever,” Lapin told the audience at Ticket Summit. — Dave Brooks

Canada Set for Olympic Influx

Olympics Update
14th August 2008, 7:45 WST

While the world is still in an Olympic mood, the City of Vancouver would like to remind you that it’s next in line to be host, and as of September 1 there’ll be just 529 days until the 21st Winter Games.

Vancouver will share the honour with the popular resort town of Whistler, in the Garibaldi Mountains 120km to the north, from February 12-28, 2010, followed by the Winter Paralympic Games in both centres from March 12-21.

The opening ceremony will be at BC Place Stadium, a covered arena, starting at 6pm local time (noon (AEST) on February 13); medal ceremonies will be held in both Vancouver and Whistler.

It will be the first time in modern Games history that the Olympic flame will be lit indoors - after the torch is carried from Olympia in Greece over the North Pole and through the Arctic down Canada’s West Coast to Vancouver.

The Games website for details of the program, background, tickets and accommodation is www.vancouver2010.com

Tickets will go on sale from this October, through Tickets.com in Canada and through the national Olympic committees of other countries.

Vancouver is the second Canadian city to host the Winter Olympics, after Calgary, Alberta, in 1988. The summer Olympics were held in Montreal in 1976 then Toronto was outvoted in favour of Beijing in 2008.

Vancouver’s Olympic Village will be in the waterfront southeastern False Creek district, an area being developed for residential and commercial buildings. In Whistler it will be in the nearby Cheakamus Valley.

Tickets.com Client Spotlight: Sweetwater Amphitheater

Music fans, get ready. An outdoor concert series is bringing some big names to Bedford County, Virginia.

Seven major acts will perform over the next month at a new regional amphitheater.

Soon thousands will crowd the field for the first ever Mariner's Landing Summer Concert Series at Smith Mountain Lake. Not even a little rain is slowing them down.

"The guys are actually pretty happy about it," says concert series creator Holly Sweet. "It's cooling them off quite a bit."

Sweet and her husband Darrin Snyder are local natives who spent the last 15 years in Nashville.

"It's combining our hometown with our hometown in Nashville," says Sweet. "Smith Mountain Lake and an outdoor concert venue go hand-in-hand."

Sara Evans will be there Friday. Acts like Lonestar and TobyMac will follow in the coming weeks.

"It is a festival setup, so we do want people to remember to bring their lawn chairs, bring their blankets," says Sweet. "The stars are supposed to be out, the weather's supposed to be great, so I think it's going to be terrific."

The Summer Concert Series is just a preview of what you'll see at the Sweetwater Amphitheater, a new Tickets.com client. Sweetwater Amphitheater will be an outdoor entertainment facility capable of hosting national musical artists, theatrical performances, festivals and other cultural events.

With a total capacity of 7,000, Sweetwater will become the premier outdoor entertainment facility in the Smith Mountain Lake region, delivering a variety of entertainment choices to the area community and visitors alike.

"Because that site was not going to be ready this year, we wanted to at least show the area what we are looking to achieve with Sweetwater Amphitheater," says Sweet.

Sweetwater will be a permanent venue with shows running from April to October. For now though, the focus is on Friday and getting 7,000 people down the narrow roads leading to the concert site.

It will be a good test run for the crowds they'll see when the amphitheater's finished.

The Sara Evans show starts tonight at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $35.00 in advance, $40.00 at the gate and can be purchased at www.tickets.com.

You can see a full schedule of upcoming concerts at www.smlconcerts.com.

Sonoma County Concerts Offer Rare, Intimate Experience

The two-night-only Steely Dan summer appearance at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts represents one of the most intimate opportunities to experience the iconic music of Steely Dan in the bands’ 30+ year performance history. Presented in the 1600 seat main theater at Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, the concert will feature Steely Dan’s incredible roster of hits, with no seat further than 75-feet from the stage!

“Steely Dan is one of the most popular and historically significant classic rock bands of all time and yet they rarely tour,” said Rick Bartalini, who oversees entertainment programming for the Santa Rosa Arts Center. “Other stops on the band’s Summer tour include the 5000 seat Bank of America Pavilion in Boston, the 7100 seat Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, the 8500 seat Greek Theatre in Berkeley, and the 9400 seat Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver. These venues are three to five times as big. So, to see and hear Steely Dan in our intimate 1600 seat theater is going to be an extremely rare and special experience. We’re fortunate and proud to be able to present the opportunity to Sonoma County.”

Becker and Fagen will draw from their deep, powerful, three-decade-plus catalog of signature hits and album favorites, all of uncompromising quality. The dapper duo will be supported, as always, by their tight, sophisticated band of world-class R&B and jazz players. Set lists may also sample from Fagen’s just released Nightfly Trilogy, and Becker’s newly released solo album, Circus Money, just out on June 10, 08. Knowing the duo’s subversive tastes, a few surprises are likely to pop up in the set as well. In addition, concertgoers will be treated to stellar opening acts, hand-selected by connoisseurs Becker and Fagen, including rising jazz star Sam Yahel and his Organ Trio, The Bill Charlap Trio, The Chris Cheek Group and other acts to be announced.

STEELY DAN have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and helped define the soundtrack of the '70s with hits including “F.M.,” “Bodhisattva,” “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Rikki Don't Lose That Number,” “Deacon Blues,” “Peg,” “Babylon Sisters,” and “Hey Nineteen,” culled from their seven platinum albums issued between 1972 and 1980 (including 1977's groundbreaking Aja). They reunited in the early '90s and have toured throughout the decade and beyond, releasing multi-Grammy winner Two Against Nature in 2000 and its acclaimed follow-up Everything Must Go in 2003. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Visit Steelydan.com for more information.
